Earlier known as Golconda, later Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah of the Shahi Dynasty named it Hyderabad. As per a historical legend Quli Qutub Shah fell in love with a modest courtesa named Bhagmati. He later named the city ‘Bhagy

anagar’. As they got married, she changed her name to Haider Mahal and thus the city was named Hyderabad. The name ‘Hyderabad’ literally describes its meaning as the "city of Haider". Hyderabad grown and got its reputation during his time in power extensively as it became a significant trading zone for all the merchants coming from Asia and Europe.

The reputation and rich success of the Hyderabad city reached the ears of the prevailing Mughal ruler Aurangazeb, the then Mughal rular captured and pillaged the capital of the flourishing Hyderabad city. f Jah became the ruler of the whole Deccan region, which undoubtedly includes Hyderabad city at the end of Mughal Empire. In 1798, the second Asaf Jahi ruler made a treaty with the British and East India Company that made the British troops stay nearby. The British selected a place near the Hussain Sagar Lake and became involved in construction of Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. It was named after the Nizam Sikander Jah.

After the Indian independence, Hyderabad continued to be a separate state within the union of India. Later the states of India were restructured on linguistic basis on November 1st, 1956. Consequently, the territories of the state of Hyderabad were alienated between newly created Andhra Pradesh, Bombay (later Maharashtra), and Karnataka.
